Dear Friends,
Dear Supporters,
we hope you are fine! We’ll get in touch with you with news from Nepal.
The curfew has been active in all of Nepal since March 23. Public transport has been discontinued, cars are only allowed to drive with a special permit. The informal sector, such as the sale of goods on the street, makes up a large part of the economy in Nepal and is prevented by the curfew. Tourism has also ceased due to the pandemic, which also leads to high economic losses. Many people who lived in poverty before the crisis or got through with a minimum wage are not earning any income.
Many people are demoralized because it is not clear whether the government is using the time to organize support. There are already regular violent clashes between the population and the police due to unfair food distribution, the violent enforcement of the curfew, misinformation. Yesterday the curfew was extended for another two weeks until June 14th.
The number of positive infections with Covid-19 is 1400 today. Currently, around 200 new positive cases are confirmed every day, as significantly more tests have been carried out for two weeks. You can find more information here on the website of the Nepalese Ministry of Health (in English)
Our activities during the crisis
Our programs are always aimed at helping people who would not have a chance to earn a living without support. The pandemic has now brought so many people into this situation that our focus is now on those who are already supported by our programs. The families of the school sponsored children urgently need help to buy food and continue to pay their rental costs. Of the 60 school sponsored children, 42 live in rented apartments. A monthly rent is on average 50 euros, which these families cannot afford due to the precarious situation. We help through your donations with direct financial means. We are always in contact with the sponsored school children. A few are unavailable because they traveled back to the village where their parents came from. Many Nepalese have returned to their villages of origin in the first days of the curfew, as they can live there more cheaply and find protection and support from their community.
The school costs have to be paid so far so that the teachers continue to receive an income. Therefore, the support of the school sponsors is still very important to us. We started a home schooling program. Our team calls our sponsored school children twice a week and gives them tasks. These tasks are shared with our team via Whatsapp, Facebook or over the phone and discussed if necessary. This way the children have at least a little support and we make sure that they are fine. Social contact over the phone is very important these days.
We support our friends from “The ODA Foundation” (https://www.facebook.com/OdaFoundation/) which is active in Karnali. There, around 1500 migrants from India cross the border to Nepal every day to get home. These are on the road for days without food and without water. People have already died on their way home. The ODA Foundation gives the returnees snacks, water, disinfectant, soap, a towel and other essential items. A bag costs $ 10. We would be happy if you support us in making it possible for people to return home safely.

OneLoveOneWorld has published a children’s book entitled “Coronavirus – A Children’s Book”. This week, 2000 copies will initially appear in Nepal, which will be distributed through private aid initiatives in the city and in the countryside. The book has been published by a publisher in London and has been translated into Nepali by OneLoveOneWorld. Thanks again to our friend Nino Christen for the graphic work. We are happy to give as many children as possible the chance to understand what is happening around them and to be able to better protect themselves and others. The book is also used by teachers as valuable material for teaching.
You can find the book here in English and here in Nepali also as a digital version.
If you would like to support us in printing and distributing books in Nepal, please donate to our donation account with the reference “book” or via PayPal. (The entire amount goes to us via PayPal. There are no costs).
We look forward to any support so that we can continue to help people in need.
You can write to us at any time with questions about individual children and families.
We look forward to hearing from you and answering your questions.
Kind regards and thank you for your commitment!
Stay healthy, your OneLoveOneWorld team
